Although Bengal Tigers make up half of the overall population of tigers, they are still endangered, with their numbers steadily declining.
Habitat
Bengal Tigers live in dense tropical forests and mangroves throughout India, Bangladesh, Burma and Nepal. Description Like most Tigers, most Bengal Tigers are orange with black stripes and a white underbelly and chest. Occasionally, a white Bengal Tiger is born. These tigers are pure white with black stripes. Bengal Tigers have a 18-25yr lifespan and a top speed of 97km pr hour. They normally grow up to between 2.4 to 3.3m long and weigh between 140-300kg. |
Diet
Bengal Tigers mostly eat deer, cattle and wild boar, but will also eat water buffalo, crocodiles, porcupines, leopards, hares and wolves. Tigers hunt using a 'stalk and ambush' method, where they will track prey quietly before jumping out to attack it. Although tigers hunt independently, they will form groups to coordinate an attack on a rhino or elephant.
Threats
The Bengal Tigers main threats are poaching and habitat destruction. Poaching tigers is illegal, but the price for one tiger on the black market is equal to a years salary.
How to help?
Thirteen countries in Asia are committed to TX2, a movement designed to double the number of tigers by 2022 (the next Chinese year of the Tiger). Areas of forest are becoming protected and in India, there is a conservation which program launched in 1973, called Project Tiger. The programme aims to increase tiger numbers and helps with the conservation of the Bengal Tiger. One way that you can help his to not buy tiger products like tiger skin, meat or cubs.
